Boogie Down in, um, San Pedro

On our way home from The Road to Volcan Barva, we passed a festival in Barva San Pedro’s town square. Last night, when I wrote this, I identified this village as Barva. This morning, Mr. I-Know-Where-I-Am-And-You-Don’t informed me it is the village of San Pedro.

Sorry… I thought it was Barva. My internal compass is of no use to me. I can find Hell’s Kitchen in a New York . . . → Read More About Boogie Down in, um, San Pedro

Granny Boo Update

Granny Boo has a very distinguished Southern accent. If Melanie Hamilton, Gone With The Wind‘s true heroine, were 96, she’d sound just like Granny Boo. Aunt Gay is there in Washington with her. Gay told us that when Granny Boo woke up this morning, she said, "Gad, am I still heah?"

Stop and/or Go

Driving in Costa Rica is a wild ting, mon. Not for the faint of heart. I didn’t drive here for the first six weeks. Scareless me was too terrified to take the wheel.

First off, it’s all so confusing. Too many intersections have one too many choices: either 2 lights, or a light and a stop sign. I couldn’t figure out if I should be stopping or going. Fortunately, cars here have horns. . . . → Read More About Stop and/or Go

My Granny Boo

The lady in red is Granny Boo. The date Christmas ’02 at my house in Key West. The year we had the 8′ tall candy-cane peace sign in our yard.

Granny Boo’s real name is Nancy Tazewell (the 12th) Lee (my grandfather’s name) Yakel (Aunt Gay’s father’s name and the only husband GB killed) Scott (Aunt Susie and Uncle Tom’s father’s name, GB’s last husband. Who we believe died of natural causes.)

That’s my mom and me with GB. Mom . . . → Read More About My Granny Boo

Key West Crackdown

This from Joe April, head of Key West Code Enforcement:

"We are taking care of it [illegal signs] to the best of our ability," April said. "There’s only so many of us, and we have to deal with illegal contractors, illegal rentals and trash and everything. Sometimes it takes months to get it solved. They claim they have First Amendment rights, and we have to tell them they don’t."

God, I miss you guys.

To Get or To Give?

Oy vey! Spanish is hard. In its favor, it’s a MUCH easier language to learn than English. For starters, each vowel has ONLY one sound in Spanish. Another huge factor is that there is almost always only ONE verb per action. Most consonants have a single sound. There are almost NO silent letters. Every word is spelled phonetically.

Spelling phonetically is especially helpful for Mo. Mo spells English phonetically. You might even say creatively. So gerbil becomes jurbull. Even if he knows he should use "steal" instead . . . → Read More About To Get or To Give?

Never Alone

This is a photo of the INS building (the "private" insurance company) in downtown San Jose. See the bright white disc in the upper right of this photo? In that cloud? Guess what that is? Er, who?

Visitors, of course!!! UFOs. And everybody sees them!!! You can see one in Costa Rica and you don’t have to keep it a secret. I LOVE that about this place. Not that I’ve ever seen a UFO. Or that there’d be anything wrong with me if I had. At least, . . . → Read More About Never Alone

Hope Springs Eternal

Today, Morgan asked the ‘rents (that would be Hal and me) to buy deoderant for him to take to school for use after soccer. I couldn’t get to the HiperMas* fast enough.  If you’ve ever been a parent of a teenager, you know what a happy day this is for us. Yes, life is good.

*The HiperMas is like Walmart. In fact, Walmart just bought it. Looks like Costa Rica is growing up, too!
