Oh, Goody!

This from today’s A.M. Costa Rica:

"President Óscar Arias Sánchez swears in an estimated 110 ‘presidential delegates’ from all over the country. They were in training Wednesday in San José and will be the eyes and ears of the government in their home areas to provide information over the problems that face their neighbors, said Casa Presidencial."

A government can’t have too many eyes and ears, can it?

Quality Time With I.C.E.

This is Alejandro who made dealing with the biggest and reputedly most frustrating bureaucracy in Costa Rica anything but. Right after I took this photo and put away my camera, he broke into this big grin which showed his devilishly handsome side… but I knew if I got the camera back out, he’d give me the Official Alejandro again. iHola, Alejandro (he’s reading this), SONRISA!

Getting ANYTHING done in Costa Rica involves waiting in line. Particularly anything bureaucratic in nature. On all the forums, in any conversations, books, websites, etc. you . . . → Read More About Quality Time With I.C.E.

Volcán Arenal Travel Tips!

Roca Negra Inn 011-506-479-9237Pet friendly, Volcán Arenal.

My friend and fellow blogger Jennifer wrote about her recent trip to Volcán Arenal and recommended Roca Negra. I googled it and found a year-old LA Times article written by an Arthur Frommer (THE Arthur Frommer?) which is the only info I found – ACK, no website??? I’m always completely surprised when this happens. Which it does quite frequently here in Costa Rica. Jen was comfortable there and it was $30 for the four of them and Bear. That’s good enough for me!

Travel Tips #2

Costa Rica is a vacationer’s wonderland. I’ve had several visitors and everyone is wowed as we were! So fun to show "new" (like we are "old") visitors around! On the forums and on the blog, future visitors write asking about Places to Stay and Visit, hence "Travel Tips" was born. Following are my answers to questions asked by a future visitor on the CRLGroup forum:

Q: Looking for some info concerning a 3 week trip. Is it easy to cash $100 dollar bills there? What about travelers checks? Is one type of travelers . . . → Read More About Travel Tips #2

A Day In David

Was enough David [da-VEED] for ‘dis broad…

Welp, that’s David. A bustling, energetic capitalist city selling everything you can imagine. No sign ordinance here, oh no. A bit overwhelming. We didn’t go into any of the stores, except for the cell phone store… I bought the cheapest (mas barrante) cell phone they had with a phone card and a car charger… $40 total. Here’s the store, . . . → Read More About A Day In David

De Blonde

Rehearsals are in full swing for Come Back to the Five & Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean. I play Sissy, a brash buxom bleached blonde, the part Cher played in the movie. The plan was for me to wear a wig for this part, a hideous idea: hot, itchy and I’d have hat hair for the opening night party. This could not be allowed to happen. So I decided to bleach my hair blonde. I’ve been blonde before, no sweat.

Besides, it’s true blondes have . . . → Read More About De Blonde

De Plane

When I first started going to Key West back in the late 70′s, we would fly a puddle jumper from Miami to the southernmost city. Usually a tiny propellor plane with about 12 seats. And everyone was served a Tequila Sunrise. That was the only thing you were served, but so what? Sometimes, if the flight wasn’t too full, you could get two. I always got two, because one was never enough. THOSE were the good old days.

Nowadays, you fly jets from Miami to Key West. No Tequila Sunrise. Too complicated.

“Whaddya Expect for 900 Bucks?”

When you blog, you "meet" people all over the world who also blog. Bloggers, as I’m sure you have realized by now, are fascinating people. Ok, maybe that’s a stretch. Maybe we are just verbose. Verbose and usually cheerful. I have a blogger friend, Dan in Buenos Aires. He is a chef. After reading his restaurant reviews and recipes for the last few months, I would eat at his kitchen counter any old time.

In the small world category, Dan considered moving to Key West and shopped for real estate there a couple of years ago. He . . . → Read More About “Whaddya Expect for 900 Bucks?”

“Estamos Volando!”

"We are flying!" That’s the motto of Air Panama, our hosts this morning as we wing our way to David, Panama in the province of Chiriquí. Actually, right now we are preparing to wing our way… still have 1/2 hour before the plane leaves. No sign of boarding, yet, though. Which, as you know, has given us PLENTY of time to visit with our friends over at the Café Britt store with their bowls and bowls of free chocolate covered macadamia nuts, and pots and pots of fresh . . . → Read More About “Estamos Volando!”
