Driving around Lexington, I was continually reminded of Malvina Reynolds‘ song Little Boxes (Download little_boxes.wav). It’s the theme song from Weeds which is how I discovered the tune. It started up in my head everytime I headed out from Mom’s house and I couldn’t make it . . . → Read More About Lexington
Ooops! I left out a detail or two: one day I’m in Costa Rica living the high life, the next, I’m in Lexington, Kentucky, land of fast horses and fine women. Lexington is 18 miles west of Winchester where I was born and raised. For the most part. We moved around some while mom was in her marriage phase. But we started off in Winchester, took a hiatus, then returned to graduate high school when Mom re-married Dad (marriage three of four).
My immediate family now lives in Lexington where the action is: my two brothers and sister and, . . . → Read More About The Thanksgiving Trip
Lexington is cold: 28°. There is frost on the ground and clouds when you talk. It’s been a long time since we’ve been in this kind of cold. Fortunately, we got to work our way down to the Lexington freeze. When we left Costa Rica, the temperature was about 70°. Dallas-Ft. Worth was 50°. Hearing the words "fifty degrees" over the loudspeaker was shocking enough… fortunately, we didn’t have to go outside in Texas.
The Dallas-Ft. Worth airport puts the huge in humongous. Our landing runway was so far from the terminal, it took 20 minutes taxi-ing at a . . . → Read More About I Can See My Breath
When ticos on this side of the valley vant to be alone at night, they drive up here to my house, lean against their cars (parked where Mo is standing in the black shirt) and laugh and while away the hours enjoying the view. Often with music. And often, like last night and at least 6 of the 15 nights we’ve lived here, till 1am.
It’s not bad, really, not like they are in my living room. I just hear muffled voices and an . . . → Read More About I Vant To Be Alone
We live in a strange and wonderful world. I live in it with my not-so-strange and oh-so-wonderful friend, Jan. Who has kept me supplied with the essentials: Triscuits, fuzzy socks, romantic novels and, now, personalized M&Ms. Who’d a thunk it?
Jan and I met in Los Angeles when we both worked at the Oar House (a bar) and Buffalo Chips (the attached hamburger joint) back in the ’70′s. I fondly refer to those as my wild party girl days: I would drink 3 entire [name your liquor concoction here], . . . → Read More About Pura Vida M&Ms
Following is a story written by local expat Lair Davis. Perfectly describes how things used to get done in Key West. And how they still get done in Costa Rica:
The Adventures of Joram
He is still a young man, my friend Joram. With his wife, Ana, a woman born here in Costa Rica, he has three children, two adorable young daughters and a handsome young son of 12.
Joram was born in Israel, immigrated to Europe at a young age, and then crossed the Atlantic Ocean to settle in the United States. He immigrated for the . . . → Read More About Workers in Manana Land

Over at Yo-Yo in Paradise, Tica Teri has a great photo on her blog this morning. A beautiful flat green space with a lone bull. Apparently next to a pig farm. These days, big green spaces, even ones next to smelly pig farms, are good for one thing and one thing only: CONDOS!!!!! We'll think of something else to feed the bulls.
Little Miss Killjoy couldn't keep her mouth shut. Here's her comment:
"Building, building, building. Keep those condos building. Feed the fire, keep building – fren-zeeee!" Sung to the tune of "Rawhide".

Scott writes the Crazy Jungle blog and he’s found hope for cancer victims. He links to a Havana CNN article. And there’s more information on the Cuba Magica site, in Spanish so I can’t read it. Yet. At the bottom of the Cuba Magica link, there is information on how to obtain the magic Escozul.
Which is derived – very carefully, I’ll bet – from scorpion venom. Sounds crazy. But penicillin is a mold that grows on oranges… how likely was that?
