Mommy

So far, so good. The first day, she spent mostly in bed, catching up on sleep. Now she’s watching her political shows* and bringing my plants back to life. Whenever I buy a plant, Hal likes to suggest I kill it in the store rather than bring it home and torture it to death. He gets such a kick out of himself.

My mother, on the other hand, has a green thumb. I think it’s because she likes plants and animals more than she likes people. She has one of those t-shirts that says "plants and animals died to . . . → Read More About Mommy

Blackout

From Thursday 6pm to Friday around 7pm, the entire country was mostly in the dark. Fortuitously, the power was on for coffee in the morning and the play at night… otherwise, we sat around staring at each other.

After sitting around in candlelight for 2 hours, we ALL fell asleep Thursday at 8pm. Like we’d been laying asphalt all day. I couldn’t keep my eyes open. It’s amazing to discover how sleepy you are when there’s nothing propping up your consciousness: no TV, no computer, no lights, no nothing. Even the boys fell right to sleep. With electricity, we . . . → Read More About Blackout

Payback

It’s 5:18am here. Mom arrives with most of her worldly possessions, including her 90lb dog Mango, on the 12:45pm plane into San Juan Santamaria International Airport.

I am not panicked about picking up her dog this time. Mostly because Hal* is doing it (poor guy). And because BRINGING your dog as opposed to SHIPPING your dog is a horse of another color entirely. Personally, I think it’s because SHIPPING is cargo which means another set of bureaucrats in another building. It’s . . . → Read More About Payback

Thumbs Up/Down

Let’s just say Pan’s Labyrinth was not my favorite movie. Too dark for me. I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Beautiful production, acting, cinematography, the lullaby is completely mesmerizing… the whole nine yards. But my stomach is in knots and I feel manipulated. HEY. I do the manipulating in my house.

I forgot to mention renting Transamerica last week, the Felicity Huffman indie movie everyone says don’t miss. Glad I didn’t: Felicity was delicious, very there. She didn’t camp a smidge which would be the temptation… The story was . . . → Read More About Thumbs Up/Down

Wooing the Expats

If there is one thing we are lacking, it’s community. Poco a poco, we are building one. The truth is, we aren’t that far from our old community. We still visit, Vonage and Skype make constant contact affordable and fun. Friends come here to visit. Plenty of Key Westers own property here. They LOVE Costa Rica: it reminds us of Key West in the old days, only hilly.

For now, we are busy making friends with current and soon-to-be expats. We’ve already loved and lost ex-expats who returned to . . . → Read More About Wooing the Expats

Owning A Gun

When I sent yesterday’s letter to A.M. Costa Rica, the editor wrote back and grilled me about owning a gun, asking if I was married to a tico, did I take the test, did I register the gun… yikes. I couldn’t figure out if he was against private citizens owning a gun or if I offended him in some way. Still don’t know… but here’s what I know about gun ownership.

You can have a gun here, either as a resident or through a corporation. You can buy here or import them. Importing is a . . . → Read More About Owning A Gun
