Highway Robbery

Not in Costa Rica. In Costa Rica, you just have to worry about someone stealing your purse. Or breaking into your house and taking your laptop. And everything else right down to the plumbing and light fixtures, if you are gone long enough. Just your everyday straightforward petty thievin’.

No. I’m talking about banks in the U.S. THEY ARE SNEAKY BEHIND-YOUR-BACK THIEVES. Nothing petty about it. I have proof. Two proofs, in fact:

#1 First Federal Savings Bank of Florida, our sweet little home-town bank in Live Oak, FL where we used to own 10 acres of . . . → Read More About Highway Robbery

Fuel for Thought

This is a common sight in Costa Rica. You are stopped behind a bus or a truck, the light changes, they take off and you choke. Exhaust fumes make it pretty much impossible to drive with your windows open. Diesel is cheap and an engine that lives on diesel lives forever. A very popular choice here.

Years ago, I heard that diesel was a cleaner fuel than gasoline. I just googled it and it appears to be true… Intellectually, I can accept that. . . . → Read More About Fuel for Thought

Final Answer

NO to short-term speculation. Unless you can live with your money tied up for longer than you hope. OR you are looking to buy huge parcels, can be patient for the REAL deals to come along, spending serious money in the process. And can live with your money tied up for longer than you hope.

Prices are too high for a flip and have escalated at such a breakneck pace, they could be in for a correction. Even a small one could stymie a small-time speculator. Think stock market: . . . → Read More About Final Answer

Riding the Oro Pendulum

It’s 3:10am Monday. We went to bed last night at about 8:30pm. Like the night before and the night before that. Because there is no TV and no internet here, nothing to keep us awake. When I woke just now, I was dreaming I was in rush hour on a train. It was one of those dreams where no one spoke, all action, moving from one event to the next with no in-between stuff. Like snippets of time. We (strangers and I) got off the train and starting moving quickly up a big hill, in a hurry to get . . . → Read More About Riding the Oro Pendulum

I Take It All Back

Jeez, I sounded really bitter in that last post, eh? Not any more. Criticia is back in her coffin, sleeping it off, and Pollyanna is recalled to life, disgustingly cheerful. After two days in Uvita [ooo-VEE-ta, think Evita except with an ooo], I’m mellow and mushy as a sloth. So what if there is a bubble? If you want to buy Costa Rica real estate and own a piece of this incredible paradise, why not? It’s your money. No matter what, it will always be a place to live. Real Estate Rant

I swore I wouldn't be doing this. But I am: I'm heading out to look at Costa Rica property for a buyer. I posted the Big Plan on the Costa Rica Living Group this morning, asking for help:

Good morning, group,

Hal and I are heading to the Dominical area today for several days. We are going to investigate developments for a buyer in the states.

I wanted to ask for two things, please. First, anyone alive down there? I would love . . . → Read More About Real Estate Rant

Fascinating:

What the world eats.

Ethical Dilemma. Sorta.

I went to the ATM last Thursday with my mom. You put your card in, you punch in your code, select ENGLISH or SPANISH, DOLLARS or COLONES (get colones, it’s easier), punch in the amount… wait while the machine whirrs and counts. Then take your cash, receipt and card. Easy.

Only this day, the machine counts and counts and counts and counts, on and on and on. It must have taken 10 minutes. I kept wondering should I stop it? Cancel? Would it debit my account anyway? Would I have to go in and try to convince someone I . . . → Read More About Ethical Dilemma. Sorta.

Ceasar Salad (specially made)

This was the description of the first item on the menu at the Arenal Observatory Lodge. $6. "Specially made." Turns out, they were not kidding.

I lived in Manhattan in the early 80′s. Had Ceasar salad prepared table side at some fabulous restaurants: rub the big wooden bowl with lemon, toss in Romaine lettuce, raw egg, big fat homemade croutons, little olive oil, fresh Parmesan, whole anchovies… tossed and served by snobby old waiters in tuxedos. You can get ALL these ingredients in Costa Rica except the tuxedos.

Let’s just say this Cesar was nothing like that. . . . → Read More About Ceasar Salad (specially made)
