“Mel Gibson, Please.”

I thought of something else I need in 2008. I need to talk to Mel Gibson. If you know him, could you please get me an audience?

Why? Well, he’s cute for one thing, although probably too old for me now. OK: DON’T tell him I said that.

Plus, he bought a huge chunk of land in Costa Rica, near Samara where Hal and Mo went for the airshow. Practically the next day, he had an audience with El Presidente during which, I have come to understand, he . . . → Read More About “Mel Gibson, Please.”

The Trouble With Buses

The bus system overall is excellent here: you can ride a bus to ANYWHERE practically FREE. All you need is time. And to be perfectly honest, unless you happen to be driving when there is no traffic which would have to be the middle of the night, you aren’t looking at too much extra of that.

It’s $1 to ride a bus from my house to San José round-trip. In the car, it’s at least $3 plus $5 in parking. Add the traffic factor and, once you’ve got the buses figured out, why would anyone drive?

Common Sight

Anyone who thinks you don’t see the "real" Costa Rica in Escazú just doesn’t live here. It’s definitely more "real" out in the campo [KAHM-poe, country], but we are surrounded. Hey… could you do this? And he was walking . . . → Read More About Common Sight

Bendiciones Por Todos

Blessings all around! The fireworks stopped at 12:35am sharp. Like last year, there was a final burst of bottlerockets shot from right in front of our house. Then silence. Everywhere. Oddest thing…

We finally put up a tree so Angela, my maid, would stop crossing herself and shaking her head every time she walked into the house… She was very happy to see it!

I’d planned on getting a Norfolk pine in a planter, like we had in Key West. But, Jorge, our Spanish teacher got wind of that idea and . . . → Read More About Bendiciones Por Todos

Where Do I Begin?

Last Thursday, the Badgetts and Mo and Ryan and I all took off for Ginnee and Phil Hancock’s home out in the boonies. I mean OUT in the BOONIES. The Badgetts brought an extra suitcase with clothes and Christmas presents for the Cabecar [kah-BECK-are] indigenous tribe. We’d all been invited to spend a couple of days with Ginnee and Phil, then attend the annual Christmas party for the Indians. Who could pass up such an interesting invitation!??

Yes, we have it good:

Next time you are driving in Costa Rica and a little annoyed, picture driving in India:

Road Perspective

Last week, I was whining sharing about the roads here. I got some nerve! My Key West friend Marina just returned from India… she says:

Darling,

You ain’t seen nuthin’ til you do India.

Bumper-to-bumper cars, buses, taxis, trucks, bicycles, motor scooters, motorcycles, tuk-tuks, elephants, cows, donkeys, horses, camels – and then, all the same with carts, small, medium and large, and even pedestrians – all weaving in and out of every available little opening, 4 vehicles abreast, no lines, no lights, no regulations, no enforcement.

And that’s in . . . → Read More About Road Perspective

Self Defense Training & Another Perspective

James has a company called Costa Rica Patrol. I wrote to him asking about his self-defense classes and also to see if he would come to our house, advise us on our household security measures. He is coming… looking forward to hearing what he says.

In this video, he is teaching the Belen fuerza pública [FWAIR-sa, strong; POO-blee-kah, public] [which is, by the way, the only armed force in the country] some pretty standard techniques. Seems they are graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Policía [s-QUAY-la, school; nah-see-oh-NALL, national; day, of; . . . → Read More About Self Defense Training & Another Perspective

Geezer Gig

About the gig last Friday night: I was fabulous. When I could remember the tune. Otherwise, we (you know, me and Lloyd) stood around lookin’ fetching, tapping our toes and smiling. The band is called Harmony Roads, by the way.

El Boyero, the bar/restaurant is pretty nice, big, open, pretty good acoustics. Most of the customers were tico and they LOVE old rock music. I had no idea! We had a few requests: The Eagles’ Hotel California, anything by Axl Rose…

Here’s the set list. Most of these songs I’ve never even heard before! Where was . . . → Read More About Geezer Gig
