Pod People

Update: If you are having trouble getting this to play, please read the notes at the bottom of this post. OK, on to the show:

I forced Hal to podcast and here is the result. WAIT. Before you listen, here’s a picture of my voice and his voice:

Even when I’m not shouting, I’m loud and annoying. Nothing like listening to a recording of yourself to make you want to hide from the world.

But do I have the humility to hide? NO. I post it on the www. Keep . . . → Read More About Pod People

The Smartest Man I Know

This is how my husband talks:

"Gold’s principle value as money to everyone but bankers and politicians is that it cannot be called into existence at will to purchase votes. We are not talking about the value of gold, per se. Of course a peanut butter sandwich is more valuable to a hungry man than a gold coin. Never the less, a man with a gold coin will rarely have to go hungry.Gold is unsurpassed as a medium of exchange, storehouse of value, and source of truth about it’s political counterpart, . . . → Read More About The Smartest Man I Know

Falling Down A Rabbit Hole

Wikipedia defines a rabbit hole as "any portal into a different or strange world." Yep, it’s looking pretty strange all right. It’s not a cool rabbit hole like Alice’s or Marlee’s. Mine is dark, deep and depressing. That darn drug war video from the last post got me started.

The completely crazy thing is, I don’t want to stop falling. I’m just not done. You know that nagging feeling there is something going on, but you just can’t put your finger on what exactly "it" is? I found it: . . . → Read More About Falling Down A Rabbit Hole

Three Dudes

Budding Mafiosos, from the look of ‘em. Mo gets special mention as a Cuban narcotraficante lookalike. That ‘stache adds to the mystery, eh? Wonder how much money one of those narcotraficante guys make? Just kidding… drug money could not be worth it.*

Robert ("the dad, old like us Hal") said:

"Yeah, they looked pretty good. They went to an area where there are lots of teens, but they complained that most were 8th graders. One car of teen girls yelled, ‘nice . . . → Read More About Three Dudes

Boot Camping

Here are photos of the boys at boot camp. When Hal saw the campsite photos, he shook his head and said, "Yeah, that’s camping. Where all the food has sand in it and you can’t find anything." He’s happy to be home. It’s still very, very quiet around here…

Theirs vs. Mine

We are talking vacations here. And mine has been so much better. Here’s Hal’s email to me a week into the trip and two days into Camp Rifleman:

"For the record, sleeping in a tent sucks. Camp food sucks. Restaurant food isn’t much better. Christ, I’m a cranky traveler. Shooting lying on your belly isn’t that much fun either. No wonder ranges have those little benches in front of the firing line. None of that pansy shit here. It’s stretch out on . . . → Read More About Theirs vs. Mine

Forget The Sewing Machines… For Now:

A Cabecar Indigenous reality

Posted by Ginnee Hancockon the Costa Rica Living GroupThu Jul 3, 2008 12:19 pm (PDT)

Yesterday a Cabecar Indigenous woman came down from the reservation with her mother and her child, a deformed two year old. The child has never seen a doctor and was born on the reservation. The birth was very difficult and one side of the child’s body is mangled. They walked for perhaps as long as 8-10 hours to seek help at the Mission. The child was carried and the Grandmother is . . . → Read More About Forget The Sewing Machines… For Now:

What He Said

This is one of the best blog posts I’ve read in a long time. It really spoke to me and the blogging/reading atmosphere around this place of late. I’ve hoisted meself on me own petard, as it were. So, a sea change, my dears, a sea change. Back to uncontrolled reading.

And, though this be madness, I am giving a go at not commenting on your comments… Your comments are grand and I read every word. But I had my say, please have yours. Too often, the time and energy I . . . → Read More About What He Said

Calling All Sewing Machines

Do you have an old (working) sewing machine tucked away in a closet? Ginnee will put it to good use:

I need used sewing machines for the Voz Que Clama Mission. American women have them sitting in their closets collecting dust. Would you ask your blog readers to please donate their old and working portable machines? They will change lives here while being put to good use.

Here is one of my projects, Angel Babies. We are . . . → Read More About Calling All Sewing Machines

Ginnee & Phil

Great new blog entries over the last couple of days here: Costa Rica Mountain. The organic garden that was just getting started when we were there last Christmas looks like it’s producing abundantly. Daughter, Ericka, has moved down (smart girl!) Their building projects are coming along… I loved reading Ginnee’s tips to building in Costa Rica. One day this will be funny, but when you are in the middle of it, the learning curve can be so not. When their house is built, we will go back for a couple of days and visit.
