China is having its way with Costa Rica. A few months ago, at China’s insistence, Costa Rica dumped Taiwan in order to form a new relationship with The Big Guy. Taiwan had been good to Costa Rica, built them a Friendship Bridge, never did anything harmful or even rude. Tough luck. China is a more prestigious trade partner and has tons more money to give to a beggar state. Bye bye Taiwan (in the middle of the night with no warning, muy humillando), Hello China.

So I take Mango, the big golden dog, to the vet because she has some persistent ear crud going on. El doctór, who is lovely and kind, the same guy who took the disgusting worm things out of Boo, scrapes a little sample off Mango’s ear, scrapes it onto a slide and examines it for quite some time under two different microscopes. Looking, turning knobs. Spraying some stuff on it. Turning the slide, looking some more.
Finally, he turns to me and, very somberly, says, "Jeest."

Here’s a taste from an interesting and informative article by James Bovard from my favorite morning reading at LewRockwell.com:
Federal Attitude Policy
TSA agents can slap fines on Americans based on "attitude," which TSA classifies as one of the "aggravating factors" in determining financial punishments. TSA has issued no guidance on the precise amount of obligatory groveling at airport checkpoints. People who question TSA commands are probably far more likely to be fined.

This was front page news in yesterday’s A.M. Costa Rica:
Municipality demands disabled access to brothelsBy Elise Sonray of the A.M. Costa Rica staff
Customers in wheelchairs will soon be able to enjoy prostitutes in a comfortable atmosphere just like any other paying visitor, thanks to the municipality.
The municipality of San José raided and shut down 25 massage parlors last month, not because the businesses were pimping prostitutes but because they didn’t have wheelchair ramps, said a city official Monday.

Abraham (ah-BRAHM), my dentist. I am so happy to have found him. He’s the husband of a friend, he works out of their gorgeous home overlooking all of the central valley, about five minutes from us. He takes his time, talks about what interests him, has been a dentist most of his life. A gentler man you will never meet. And a fine dentist, to boot.
Last week, I went to Abraham to see about removing my mercury amalgam fillings. Before he would even talk about that, he insisted on cleaning my teeth. My recent cleaning was . . . → Read More About God Bless Abraham

I’ve fallen down another rabbit hole. Last Sunday, a friend here in Costa Rica, Dennis, sent me a video (the first one below). It got me going, to put it mildly. Since that moment, 5:30am last Sunday morning, I have been glued to my computer all day everyday, reading, researching, crying in anger and empathy, being more grateful than I thought possible, laughing when Jenny McCarthy is in my video du moment. I was never a fan; I am now. And aha-ing. . . . → Read More About Discouraged.
Ryan is a lovebug. Spontaneously affectionate, huggy, sweet. Morgan, although he adores me (of course, who wouldn’t?), is not spontaneously affectionate. When the boys are away, Ryan calls me to chat probably once a week, sometimes a few days in a row if there is something to share. Morgan would have to be away for at least three weeks before he would think about calling me. He’s just like that.
But three days at Rancho Mastatal, and Mo calls. "Wow," I thought, "he wants to chat!"
Not exactly: he wants to know if they are there as . . . → Read More About “Mom, are we here as guests or volunteers?”
