Costa Rica is a socialist country. I am glad of that. Personal freedom is often incorrectly defined and even when it iS properly defined, it is over rated and nearly always under-used by most people. In other words, for the vast majority of people, it is not a useful thing to have and especially when the social cost to obtain and maintain it is so high. Just be content that you are in Costa Rica and NOT in the U.S.

I am definitely happy to be here rather than there! Because the US has been heading down a tyrannical socialist path with guns, SWAT and military to enforce all those laws. BUT praise the Lord: the liberty movement is advancing at a furious pace to restrict government takeover of every aspect of our lives, and return our personal freedoms.

To me, personal freedom is defined in the strictest libertarian sense: natural rights and all that as presented in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Not over-rated in my book. Under-used? In contracts, under-use does not invalidate a clause at all. Congress is finding this out as we speak.

It seems to me that the social cost to obtain and maintain socialism is pretty darn high. Coming up on $12.5 Billion to date and more on the way.

Here in CR, last December, Arias had to borrow from his central bank, which is against their Constitution - a foreshadowing - to pay all the gov workers their Christmas bonuses. Will this gov now seek to reduce its expenses? No. Borrowing this time didn't hurt that much...

You failed to mention that for those Ticos living out of country they are SOL because the one thing Costa Rica doesn't allow is an absentee ballot which is a shame. Just because Ticos our out the country doesn't mean they don't want to vote.

Thanks for telling me, JPR, I did not know that!
