Never Again

Famous last words, but I mean it this time. There isn't a bone in my body that doesn't ache. When I lay down, omg, it is heaven of the sort you only dream about.

We have nine bags and three laptops Hal and I: pretty much our net worth. To add a level of fun you can't get just anywhere, I've lost my passport. Sweet. Because, you know, I'm really in the mood for a challenge.

First thing in the am, Hal is going to the airport with 7 . . . → Read More About Never Again

Leaving The Life

Moving from Costa Rica is way harder than I thought it would be. I have completely misjudged how attached I am to our lives here, to the Costa Rican people, to my new friends. In the past couple of days, in particular, I realize I have made friends here in less than five years who are as close to me as the friends I left behind in Key West after 30 years there. Just as loving, just as true.

“How Are You Feeling?”

I've been getting that a lot lately, combined with seriously concerned looks, both in Kentucky and here in Costa Rica. I was wondering why until I happened to catch myself in the mirror last night. You know, just regular, without the posing. It was a little scary: the hair. No wonder people look at me like I might break! Here's what they see:

Scared yet? Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha! That little bald spot in front is attractive, yes? I can't dye my hair because what's left will probably dissolve. It's . . . → Read More About “How Are You Feeling?”

Home Again

I'm back in Costa Rica as of Tuesday. Looking out over my 180 degree view of the central valley and the mountains of Heredia and Alajuela beyond, listening to my chickens beg at the kitchen door. Man, those girls can whine! They know the good stuff comes outta the kitchen door and they like to make sure everyone knows they are available to chow down. Too funny.

I miss living in Costa Rica already. Especially being immersed in Spanish. I was so desperate to hear Spanish while . . . → Read More About Home Again

Stress? What stress? Hey! I asked you a QUESTION!

Moving is really easy: you just throw everything you own into boxes, then lug them around the world on airlines for $100 a box. Piece of cake. Actually, I could use a piece of cake, now that I think of it. A big fat piece of three layer chocolate cake with gobs of icing and some of those pink roses. But I'm going to skip it because I am still in KY, land of the Gigantically Obese.

On the health and well-being scale, Kentucky would be dead last. At least, I'm hoping they would be. Surely there are not . . . → Read More About Stress? What stress? Hey! I asked you a QUESTION!

The Gringo Teen Thang

Maybe some of the following applies to tico teens, too, I don't know. I only know mine. Very well. As they do me, since we're together all day every single day and always have been.

In Fred's comment yesterday, he brought up points I had originally included in that post, then erased to keep it manageable. But they are all considerations on the moving pro/con whiteboard, particularly the Gringo Teen Thang. Which is decidedly pro.

We are not moving because there is something wrong with . . . → Read More About The Gringo Teen Thang

Three Little Things

Thing #1: Little Known Facts About Costa Rica

Not just in Kentucky, either. YOU probably know this stuff, but I'm continually flabbergasted at the people who don't. Flabbergasted.

1. Costa Rica is NOT an island. If you don't believe me, search "map costa rica" and look really closely. You might need the definition of "island" first.

2. Costa Rica is in CENTRAL America, not South America. Honest.

3. It's COASTa Rica, not CAHSTa Rica. Have I mentioned this? Dare to say it correctly.

Thing #2: Bald
