Mam

When we first moved here, of all the people we thought might come to visit wild and woolly Costa Rica, Mam, Hal's mom, would be the very last. Not just because she had never shown particular interest in traveling to foreign lands, but because she had been quite ill during the preceding year. She was a shadow of her former self, a mere slip of a girl at 79 years old, quite frail, frequently needing oxygen.

Eh, those minor details didn't . . . → Read More About Mam

My Cup Runneth Over

Mostly with things to do, but I’ve been gifted with a few lovelies from the universe as well.

1. The first to do today was to search online for the article starring me in the L.A. Times. I seem to have a knack for drawing attention to myself. For free, but hoping it leads to a paying gig. To read the whole article, you have to close the seductive Halle Berry movie ad about a million times. Small price to pay, n’est-ce pas? Actually, I do not star but rather close. And they mention the broad website! . . . → Read More About My Cup Runneth Over

Fierce

Xavier’s baby sister, Megan, 41, passed away last night. At 32, she discovered she had breast cancer. They gave her four years then. HA! They didn’t know Megan. When you look up determined or fierce in the dictionary, there should be a picture of Megan. She fought with every ounce of her being, with every last breath. She’s had every operation, removal, addition, tubes, pills, shots, everything. She fought through it all with intense anger and intense good cheer.

And despite the dire predictions. We’ve been called so many times in the last couple of years with . . . → Read More About Fierce

Scott Found A Cure For Cancer!

Scott writes the Crazy Jungle blog and he’s found hope for cancer victims. He links to a Havana CNN article. And there’s more information on the Cuba Magica site, in Spanish so I can’t read it. Yet. At the bottom of the Cuba Magica link, there is information on how to obtain the magic Escozul.

Which is derived – very carefully, I’ll bet – from scorpion venom. Sounds crazy. But penicillin is a mold that grows on oranges… how likely was that?

Wishin’ and Hopin’ and Sweatin’ and Dreamin’

Sweatin’ my butt off in Manuel Antonio, dreamin’ of my cool mountain. YIKES. You forget how HOT and WET it is at sea level!!! Beautiful, though.

We just fed squirrel monkeys at our hotel La Posada which is great: comfortable and clean.

But here’s the real reason for today’s musings: after Monday’s post about breast cancer, I got requests from two people to post info on the click-to-donate sites.

The first request is from my adoption godmother, Sherry Read. She literally . . . → Read More About Wishin’ and Hopin’ and Sweatin’ and Dreamin’

Pink October

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Pink is the order of the day. My Aunt Susie, my mom’s baby sister, died of breast cancer at the age of 49. My sister in law, Megan, 40, has been fighting the beast for 8 years now. She is losing the battle, but God what a warrior.

Think pink! Buy pink flowers (sending these Gerbera daisies to Megan today – I used Martha’s Flowers before I found this flowers for the fight website), wear pink underwear, shirts, shoes, nail . . . → Read More About Pink October

Mommy, Megan and Granny Boo

I’m not wanting to write about this because it’s very very sad. Heartbreaking, really. I think it’s why I haven’t been good about blogging the past few days. This topic is sitting on top of everything else. That’s death for you. It is achingly unpleasant. Especially long drawn out death. In my family, two people we love are pretty much waiting to die. Wish I had a good euphemism for that.

Hal’s baby sister, Megan, 40, has been battling – and I do mean battling – breast cancer for over 8 years . . . → Read More About Mommy, Megan and Granny Boo

Drive-By Mastectomy

This morning I got the following email from my sister in law, Megan, who has been living with breast cancer for 8 years. She is 40, is married and has 3 children, now 9, 11 and 13. She’s had a mastectomy and every other thing they can do to you in the name of medical care. If she wants this bill passed, I’m in. It took me less then 30 seconds to sign the petition.   You can find it here.

Or go . . . → Read More About Drive-By Mastectomy
