Oh Romeo, Romeo, dónde está, Romeo?

For my birthday celebration tonight, we watched Franco Zefferelli‘s Romeo and Juliet. The boys are diving into a little Shakespeare in homeschool and this movie burned a place in my heart 38 years ago. I remember the first time I saw it like it was yesterday. Was I more in love with Olivia Hussey or Len Whiting? I saw it at least 10 times. It took my breath away. And did you know that Laurence Olivier did the narration?

We all enjoyed it tonight, even the . . . → Read More About Oh Romeo, Romeo, dónde está, Romeo?

“Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean!”

"Today’s the day!" as Mel Fisher would intone. The Little Theatre Group‘s production of "Come Back…" opens tonight at 7:30p at the Blanche Brown Theatre in Escazu. Tickets are 1500 colones ($5) for adults and 1000 colones ($2) for students. You can’t do better than that for live theatre!!!

I play Sissy, "a fun-loving sexpot who married the local alpha male"… oh yes, some typecasting going on here. That’s me in a nutshell. In the movie and on Broadway, Sissy was played by Cher. Not her best performance, but she was . . . → Read More About “Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean!”

Memorial to A Man’s Cat

This from A.M. Costa Rica this morning:

"The tunnel under Avenida 1 at Parque España is getting a mosaic called ‘Billy’ in honor of artist  Carlos Tapia’s late cat.  Henry Esquivel and an assistant are at work in the photo. Both sides of the tunnel will be tiled as part of a municipal program."

I will go by there today and see it – I love this kinda stuff!

De Blonde

Rehearsals are in full swing for Come Back to the Five & Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean. I play Sissy, a brash buxom bleached blonde, the part Cher played in the movie. The plan was for me to wear a wig for this part, a hideous idea: hot, itchy and I’d have hat hair for the opening night party. This could not be allowed to happen. So I decided to bleach my hair blonde. I’ve been blonde before, no sweat.

Besides, it’s true blondes have more fun. Everyone opens . . . → Read More About De Blonde

Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Costa Rica to Nashville

Sunday morning we saw the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. It was brilliant. Chosei Komatsu is our conductor, very accomplished as you will see from his website. And very cute which I personally find enhances my enjoyment of, well, almost anything. The program started with Noches en los Jardines de España [Nights in the Spanish Garden] by Manual de Falla. Which we missed because we were seconds late and they would not let . . . → Read More About Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Costa Rica to Nashville

Movies in Costa Rica

Movies R us. Like most Americans, we are BIG on movies. We watched a movie practically every night on pay-per-view. We cried when cancelling our Netflix subscription. The boys have seen Memento, West Side Story, The Magnificent Seven, To Wong Foo (an all-time favorite), Grease, The Godfather, Dogma, The King & I, Almost Famous, Gone With The Wind, Mr. Magoo’s A Christmas Carol, Matrix… everything. Except Pulp . . . → Read More About Movies in Costa Rica

Artwork

We’ve been looking at artwork every chance we get. We attend all the art festivals, visit galleries, shops, the like. Our Jack Baron’s cats, Judi Pingston’s Island Girl, my Elvis, Hal’s Haitian marble players are in storage along with all the photos. High and dry, thank you very much. We finally have a piano in our Costa Rica bungalow – now we need some artwork!!!!

Sadly, Key West has ruined us. We’ve been surrounded by such artistic enthusiasm for so many years, artwork of every style . . . → Read More About Artwork
