I got it bad. I'd rather hang out with my chickens than almost anything. They are so cute, they don't ask for much other than food and water. I'm pretty sure they like it when I'm there. They don't run away (too much) when I put my hand out to put them down for the day or up for the night. They come to the sound of my voice. They listen when I talk. (Oh, they like me!) Here's what they look like now:

This is a short video (really short if you skip forward) on what gets us out of bed in the wee hours:
P.S. After the video is my cry for help. Ok, "cry for help" is possibly a little dramatic. But "looking for advice" has no punch.
Cry for Help: I love shooting video – it's fun and the editing is fun. But I shot this with my point and click and it shows. I need a step up in video cameras, hopefully for under $300. Can anyone make a recommendation? I've been to those "compare and buy" . . . → Read More About Who Needs Roosters?
Island Chica took a couple of fun photos while she was in Costa Rica last month. Love this face! If he could just keep it quiet…
Nothing makes me sick. Nothing grosses me out. I’m a mother. Not only that, I’m a doctor-wannabe. I watch surgery shows. Watching liposuction gets me a little jumpy, but otherwise I’m immune to gross stuff.
Or so I thought. Don’t worry: no photos. If you saw what I saw today, you would close this window and likely never visit again.
Boo had a bump on her neck. For about a week she’s had this bump. That kept getting bigger. Like from pimple to 25¢ gumball size. The boys were a little panicked. . . . → Read More About Compulletely And Horrifyingly Gross
Jane wrote to me this morning:
Hey, Saratica:
My Son has visited your site many times and loves all the info you give. He and I are coming to CR this weekend. We are enrolled in a language school in San Jose. We will have the afternoons and weekends free. Can you give us advice on places to see and things to do?
Thanks for taking the time to read and reply,Jane
I don’t always have time to write back, although I certainly mean to… But sometimes days and weeks go by (right, Arp?) while the . . . → Read More About What To Do On Weekends
The only wildlife I see more than my dogs are spiders. Tarantulas, to be specific. They are very much like Winston: big hairy lugs, kinda slow moving. Actually, Winston is slow-moving unless you have one of his toys in your hand – he’s agile for a big hairy lug. I’ve never tried to toss a rubber toy for a tarantula so I have no idea if they can move fast. And, no, I’ve never tried to toss one AT a tarantula. As hideous as they are, my Buddhist mother would kill me if I killed one. I don’t . . . → Read More About Speaking of Pets
We love the wildlife here, down to the bugs, the ants and the spiders. We haven’t come across any snakes to love, thank goodness. That will be the real test. But, hey, the tarantula didn’t turn me. I remain optimistic.
Much as we love them, we don’t want them in our beds, on our toilet seats, in our dressers, on our dining table, in our sofa, on our food. You need to know a good pesticide, but it is not our first choice. It may do the trick, . . . → Read More About Ant Killer
This is my desk where I spend a good amount of time. Right now, out the window on the right, I am looking at the twinkling lights of San Jose off in the valley. It’s like Christmas every night. I can just see the dim outline of the mountains on the other side. I’m looking thru the zillion bugs plastered to the window, moths and things seeking the light and a little company.

So sad. My mom, Miss P.E.T.A. 2000, is there now, helping pick up the pieces.
I’m blaming this on FEMA and their damn trailers.
This would never happen in Costa Rica because we don’t have trailer parks here, or even any trailers. A mobile home would actually be a luxury item in some of the shanty towns. Perhaps FEMA could send some down.
Ooops, forgot: FEMA is being disbanded. Normally I would think this a good thing. Unfortunately, all that power and corruption isn’t going away. . . . → Read More About Bird Flu hits Key West trailer park
