“How Are You Feeling?”

I've been getting that a lot lately, combined with seriously concerned looks, both in Kentucky and here in Costa Rica. I was wondering why until I happened to catch myself in the mirror last night. You know, just regular, without the posing. It was a little scary: the hair. No wonder people look at me like I might break! Here's what they see:

Scared yet? Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha! That little bald spot in front is attractive, yes? I can't dye my hair because what's left will probably dissolve. It's . . . → Read More About “How Are You Feeling?”

Fallout (or More On The Hangnail)

DAILY REFLECTIONS July 4 IDENTIFYING FEAR: "The chief activator of our defects has been self-centered fear…" When I feel uncomfortable, irritated, or depressed, I look for fear. This "evil and corroding thread" is the root of my distress: Fear of failure; fear of others' opinions; fear of harm, and many other fears. I have found a Higher Power who does not want me to live in fear and, as a result, the experience of my spiritual program is freedom and joy. I am no longer willing to live with the multitude of character defects that characterized . . . → Read More About Fallout (or More On The Hangnail)

Key-Zen

I’m in Key West right now, chillin’. Yep, chillin’ in 90 degree heat. I had planned to come up the 2nd week of May, to check on the properties I manage, see about adding rentals to that corral, to chill. I had a ticket paid for and everything. Then I got kinda busy coming out of a coma and had to cancel.

It’s actually good I didn’t come then because . . . → Read More About Key-Zen

Thank You

I just read all the comments. There are not words to express my feelings right now. (Yes, I'm speechless.) It meant so much to my family to hear from you, cheering me away from the edge. It worked!!!

Everything is going great: I lifted a bottle of Clorox over my head today. When I got home, I couldn't wash my hair unless I bent over and got my head to hand level… I could barely raise my hand to touch my head! Combing my hair was an effort.

I'm walking up and down the stairs, rarely use the oxygen. . . . → Read More About Thank You

“Hey, lady. Purple sweatshirt. No, NEXT to the pink cap – yes, you. Step away from the abyss.”

Hi. I'm home, as of Tuesday night. Dorothy nailed it: there is no place like home. My bed, my shower. My husband, my boys. Hal's cooking. He made me soup Tuesday night. I hadn't had anything to eat with that much color or flavor in three weeks.

Three weeks, two of it in ICU. ICU. ICU is for old sick people. I'm only 54, I take good care of myself. How did someone so healthy get so sick? Nobody really knows. I have my theories, naturally, . . . → Read More About “Hey, lady. Purple sweatshirt. No, NEXT to the pink cap – yes, you. Step away from the abyss.”

Saratica Cheats Death Again

Dennis Cooper, editor of Key West the Newspaper, has generously offered to put this announcement in this week's paper; it will catch Sally's blog readers up as well:

Key West’s recovering Realtor and Red Barn Theater regular Sally O’Boyle has reinvented herself as Saratica in the blogosphere and here in Costa Rica. Followers of Sally’s blog are well aware of her mistrust of conventional medicine and her enthusiasm for healing theory that emphasizes staying well rather than treating symptoms.

She may find herself tweaking her theories a bit as she emerges today from 13 days in . . . → Read More About Saratica Cheats Death Again

Saratica Continues to Improve

Sally is still in the ICU at San Juan de Dios hospital in San Jose. She is much improved. She is spending ever longer periods of time conscious and disconnected from a ventilator. The IV antibiotic treatment is making progress against her pneumonia. She has no liver damage from the overdose of Tylenol she took.

She is in good spirits, retains a sense of humor despite not being able to speak for the volume of plastic tubing in her mouth, and is eager to leave the ICU and the hospital.

In keeping with her desire to be the . . . → Read More About Saratica Continues to Improve

It Wasn’t Dengue

Saratica is in the intensive care unit of Clinica Biblica in San Jose. She has a particularly nasty form of pneumonia. She will be sedated for at least the next three days and maybe longer. I will put more information here as I have it.

She and her family would appreciate prayers or whatever get-well vibes you beam out for her.

Hal

P.S. A few of the locals have asked about visiting. Sally is being kept in a medical coma. I don’t expect she will be brought out of it before Monday morning. I’ll let everyone know when . . . → Read More About It Wasn’t Dengue
