Book Review: On Bumping into the Divine

Now that I'm a trippy spiritual being instead of the annoying human doing I was before almost dying, a couple of spiritual books have found their way onto my nightstand. Years ago, while trying to Find Myself, I read them all. Desperate for answers, I read every self help, know thyself and "become a spiritual being" book I could find. For years, I read. Mostly to no avail. I always felt better while reading, but the Great Spiritual Awakening eluded me. So I gave up.

Today, after years working a spiritual program, . . . → Read More About Book Review: On Bumping into the Divine

What Dick Says

I have a wise friend, a man this time (most of my wise friends are little old ladies). Dick belongs to a club I frequent. He spends half his time in Costa Rica and half his time in a northern clime. Just before he leaves here every year, he says: "Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think. Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, while you're still in the pink. The years go by as quickly as you wink. Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it's later than you think."

Falling From Grace

China is having its way with Costa Rica. A few months ago, at China’s insistence, Costa Rica dumped Taiwan in order to form a new relationship with The Big Guy. Taiwan had been good to Costa Rica, built them a Friendship Bridge, never did anything harmful or even rude. Tough luck. China is a more prestigious trade partner and has tons more money to give to a beggar state. Bye bye Taiwan (in the middle of the night with no warning, muy humillando), Hello China.

Effect A Spiritual Awareness

During our last trip to Key West, we had dinner with a new couple, George and Izzy. About 15 years longer on this earth than us, they’d been Key Westers longer as well, but we’d never met. That’s rare. In a small town like Key West, you’ve usually met everyone at least once at some gathering or other.

Libertarians, they’d found us through Hal’s blog. George had even run for governor of his home state as a Libertarian! That takes some fortitude and strength of character. They are well-traveled, well-read and know a thing or . . . → Read More About Effect A Spiritual Awareness

Wrong Question

This morning, I had to admit to Hal that my homesickness has ratcheted up a notch lately. A big notch. So much so that, in my mind, I unconsciously find myself adding "when we go back" to the end of my thoughts. Unconsciously, until this morning when I heard my thoughts loud and clear. It stopped me in my tracks. Why was my mind going there? Why am I so homesick all of a sudden?

Consciously, I don’t want to go back. Our lives are good here. We are comfortable, we know people, we get around, we love the . . . → Read More About Wrong Question

Talk About Your Wild Claims

I found this while researching sat yoga which lead to all manner of sites on all manner of yoga, one site leading to the next. The following promises are from a brand (style? type? path?) of yoga called Brahma Kumaris (emphasis mine):

Tree of humanity

It is taught that all of life will die and return to Nirvana, then take birth in the forthcoming cycle at their predestined time and place. ….  A new world order starting with the birth of Krishna and a population of 900,000 is believed to go on to . . . → Read More About Talk About Your Wild Claims

Or Maybe…

I just need more to do, idle hands and all that. Maybe if I were busier, I wouldn’t have time to sit around examining my navel. I wouldn’t hear the what because maybe there is no what. Maybe I’m just making it all up for Something Important to do.

Speaking of which, there are two more to dos on the list I neglected to mention:

1) Tamara, Margaret, two women I met through Helping Hands Costa Rica (HHCR), and I worked with Gail Nystrom, truly an angel to the poor here in Costa . . . → Read More About Or Maybe…

The New Me

The Old Me is going to be inhabiting my body for a few more weeks because, sadly, My New Spiritual Training Ground had to cancel its weekend seminar for lack of interest. Too bad, because I’m anxious to dive in. Are there really so few seekers in Costa Rica? Here’s what I seek and what they . . . → Read More About The New Me
