Beauty & The Beast

We're livin' the life of Riley down here in lazy Costa Rica. Even without a plugged nickel to our names. How we manage this, I'll never know. But I'm not going to ask too many questions and I'm not going to look at the balance sheet. Faggeddaboudit. Specially now that we are farmers, growing our own food. Who needs money? I hope one can live on peppers, tomatoes and gladiolas…

Goin’ to The Show

"Yeah, I was in the show. I was in the show for 21 days once – the 21 greatest days of my life. You know, you never handle your luggage in the show, somebody else carries your bags. It was great. You hit white balls for batting practice, the ballparks are like cathedrals, the hotels all have room service, and the women all have long legs and brains." – Kevin Costner as Crash Davis in Bull Durham

Love Letters

This* is where I've been the last couple of weeks, directing this play for the Little Theatre Group. The LTG is one of only two English speaking theatres in Costa Rica, the other one being in Dominical (my other favorite part of the country). Amazingly, LTG has been in operation since 1949.

My God, that makes it older than ME.

We moved here 1/06, I found the LTG 2/06 and was thrilled to have it. LTG has . . . → Read More About Love Letters

HEY – Something Good Happened!

To me, at least… My friend, Janis, sings in a band with the lunata guy. I went to rehearsal earlier this week, so I could learn the back-up harmonies, learning the play list, hangin’ with the band. Really fun!!!

Yesterday, Janis threw her back out and is bed-ridden for at least three days. They have a gig tonight at El Boyero in San Antonio de Escazú. So… guess who is the new girl singer in the band? And it’s a geezer band, of course – I fit right in!!!

I don’t know most of the songs and . . . → Read More About HEY – Something Good Happened!

Alive!

That would be me. Just barely… My play opened last Friday and we’ve been working our butts off the last week getting it together. I’m exhausted!

It’s a funny play: Strawberries in January. A romantic comedy, very fast-paced, I LOVE my fellow castmates and my director (at this link, click the "Up Next" button). We’ve had packed houses for all three shows so far and the audience has laughed and laughed. Heck, we still laugh backstage! Very fun. It runs for two more weeks, Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday matinee. Then we’ll bring . . . → Read More About Alive!

Officially Pho-toed:

Recalled to THIS life…

Yesterday was the last day of the play (scroll down to page three – my name in cyberspace) and, as usual after a run, I feel like my life is my own again. Theatre: can’t live with it, can’t live without it. Like chocolate…

So today, I’m having fun catching up on emails and news. While traveling the blogosphere, I came across an interesting tidbit on Crooks and Liars. They are a little left of me (no kidding), but we seem to generally hate the same people, the war and those back-stabbing self-centered egomaniacs we . . . → Read More About Recalled to THIS life…

“Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean!”

"Today’s the day!" as Mel Fisher would intone. The Little Theatre Group‘s production of "Come Back…" opens tonight at 7:30p at the Blanche Brown Theatre in Escazu. Tickets are 1500 colones ($5) for adults and 1000 colones ($2) for students. You can’t do better than that for live theatre!!!

I play Sissy, "a fun-loving sexpot who married the local alpha male"… oh yes, some typecasting going on here. That’s me in a nutshell. In the movie and on Broadway, Sissy was played by . . . → Read More About “Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean!”

De Blonde

Rehearsals are in full swing for Come Back to the Five & Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean. I play Sissy, a brash buxom bleached blonde, the part Cher played in the movie. The plan was for me to wear a wig for this part, a hideous idea: hot, itchy and I’d have hat hair for the opening night party. This could not be allowed to happen. So I decided to bleach my hair blonde. I’ve been blonde before, no sweat.

Besides, it’s true blondes have . . . → Read More About De Blonde
